Perennial herbs often with a woody rootstock. Leaves alternate, glandular hairy, sessile. Heads clustered. Involucre turbinate to globular; bracts membranous, ± transparent, yellow to brown, ciliate at the margin. Florets mostly tubular. Receptacle without scales. Cypselas oblong, papillose. Pappus of barbellate bristles, sometimes plumose at the top.
