Coarse robust stoloniferous or rhizomatous perennials. Culms ± terete, 1–2 m high. Leaves flat, 3-ranked, scabrous on the margin and keel. Spikelets in dense corymbose clusters, usually with 2 flowers but usually only the lowest perfect. Glumes spirally imbricate, obtuse; c. the lowest 4 empty but without empty ones above the perfect flowers. Perianth absent. Stamens 2. Style 2-fid. Nut ± drupe-like, with an inconspicuous corky base.
