Rhizomatous perennial. Culms terete or angular, up to 50 cm high. Leaves rigid, channelled, mostly basal, often twisted, usually as long as the culm. Inflorescence paniculate. Spikelets brown, c. 15 mm long, several within each bract, distant, with 1 perfect flower and a male or sterile one below it. Glumes spirally imbricate; 2 lowest ones sterile.
