Small trees with young stems flattened at nodes. Leaves opposite, margins toothed. Flowers bisexual, in axillary panicles. Perianth segments 15–20 in 3 or 4 whorls. Stamens 4–7 with truncate anther appendage and filaments with glands. Staminodes 5–10. Carpels 4–12, tapering into a short style. Floral tube enlarged in the fruit to form a capsule in a similar manner to that of Doryphora sassafras. Seeds hairy.
