Prickles on the capsule mostly 2 mm wide at the base or less, up to 12 mm long. Corolla white or purplish, 3–4 cm diam. Leaves sinuate-dentate, ovate in outline. Robust herb up to 1.5 m high. Poisonous weed. Widespread. Weed of cultivation, stock yards and waste places. Introd. from America. Fl. summer–autumn
