Trees or tall shrubs, dioecious. Leaves alternate, entire, without stipules. Flowers unisexual, regular; male flowers several together in axillary clusters; female flowers 1–3 together, larger than the male. Calyx and corolla 4–5-lobed; corolla lobes imbricate in the bud. Stamens 12–20, epipetalous or free. Ovary superior, 4–5-locular, with 2 ovules in each loculus; placenta axile. Fruit a berry. Seeds much compressed.
