Submerged, dioecious herb. Stems elongated, occasionally branching, with adventitious roots. Leaves linear, sessile, in whorls of 4–6, up to 2 cm long, densely crowded towards the apex; margins entire or minutely denticulate. Flowers unisexual, solitary in tubular spathes in the leaf axils. Male flowers pedicellate; petals 3, white; stamens 3–9. Female flowers sessile; styles 3, each 2-lobed or notched, free to the base. Coast and Cumberland Plain. Plants form dense masses in still water. Fl. spring–summer
