Tufted annual or short-lived perennial up to 70 cm high. Culms usually much-branched. Leaf blades convolute, up to 3 mm wide. Spikelets with 3–6 flowers with 1 fertile, in spike-like panicles up to 10 cm long; rhacilla disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes ± unequal. Lemmas with 9 plumose awns up to 9 mm long. Barralier.
