Glandular ring below nodes on culms and usually on pedicels. Pedicels of non-terminal spikelets mostly as long as or longer than the spikelet, 3–7 mm long. Panicle up to 25 cm long and 16 cm wide; the main branches divided usually only once. Spikelets dark green or leaden, mostly 4–7 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, flattened, with 6–12 (mostly 8–10) florets. Lemmas with straight apices. Perennials with culms up to 60 cm high. Leaf blades c. 2 mm wide, becoming involute when dry. Widespread. Grasslands, open forests and woodlands. Fl. late summer–autumn.
