Culms much flattened, unbranched, 30–100 cm high; leaf sheaths obtuse, thin, appressed, 12–20 mm long. Rhizome short, almost erect. Male spikelets narrow-ovate to ovate, 5–7 mm long, on filiform pedicels. Female spikelets on very short pedicels, narrower than the males and sometimes longer. Perianth segments 4. Stamens and styles 2; ovary 2-locular, Widespread. Wet ground in the open
