Rhizomatous perennials with long, thick and woody rhizome. Leaves reduced to an obtuse sheath or with a minute mucro. Spikelets numerous in a compact apparently lateral globular cluster. Glumes concave, obtuse or mucronate, brown, closely imbricate. Hypogynous disc present at the base of the smooth plano-convex nut. Stamens 3. Tufted plants up to 70 cm high. Coast. Damp places, especially near the sea on dunes and cliffs
