Culms hollow, with c. 6–11 nodes. Glumes smooth or obscurely scabrous; lower and upper ones usually much shorter than the middle ones. Panicle very spreading; each partial panicle dividing 4–5 times. Coarse tufted herbs up to 2 m high. Widespread in a variety of situations
