Perennial herbs, often ± clothed with cottony hairs. Leaves alternate, or the lower ones very rarely opposite, entire. Heads solitary or in compound inflorescences. Involucres mostly ± hemispherical; bracts imbricate in several rows, papery or scarious, sometimes with a basal claw. Florets numerous, bisexual or some sterile. Receptacle without scales. Cypselas glabrous papillose or hairy. Pappus of barbellate hairs.A recent revision places all the following species except for H. calvertianum and H. leucopsideum in a new Genus Coronidium Paul G.Wilson.
