Rhizomatous perennials up to 1 m high. Leaves reduced to basal sheathing scales. Culms terete, with transverse septa. Spikelet solitary, ovoid or oblong-fusiform, 1–3 cm long, lateral, with numerous flowers. Glumes spirally imbricate, obtuse. Perianth scales numerous; 2 outer lateral ones with ciliate keels. Stamens 8. Style 2-fid. Nut compressed, smooth. Coastal swamps; lower Blue Mts, e.g. Glenbrook Lagoon. (Fig. 46)
