Perennial herb with a creeping scaly rhizome and erect culms up to 1 m high; dioecious or monoecious. Flowers mostly unisexual in a narrow panicle or in apparent spikelets. Glumes loose, not closely imbricate. Bracteoles usually 2 under the flower, within the glume. Perianth segments 6, glume-like or hyaline. Stamens 3, usually reduced to staminodes in the female flowers. Ovary 3-angled, 3-locular; stylar branches 3. Capsule opening at the angles. Male and female inflorescences not very different.
