Water Nymphs

8 species native Aust.; all states and territories except Tas.

Submerged plants growing in fresh or brackish water; dioecious or monoecious. Leaves opposite or apparently whorled, linear, ± toothed. Flowers small, unisexual, solitary, axillary, sessile or nearly so. Flowers unisexual. Male flowers; anther solitary, with 1–4 cells, enclosed in a membranous ± tubular bract or perianth irregularly rolled back. Female flowers with 1 carpel, sessile; style 2–4-branched. Fruit an achene.
