Spikelets with 1 floret, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes subequal, longer than the floret, acuminate. Lemmas with a terminal loosely twisted slightly bent deciduous awn and often with a cup-like corona at the base of the awn. Inflorescence a loose or contracted panicle. Tufted perennials usually with branching culms. Leaf blades flat or inrolled; ligule small.
