21 species in Aust. (5 native, 16 naturalized); all states and territories

Spikelets with 1 bisexual floret and a sterile lemma below it, awnless, compressed, solitary or in pairs in 2–4 rows on one side of the rhachis. Lower glume usually absent; upper glume and sterile lemma equal. Fertile lemma and palea coriaceous. Inflorescence a panicle; the branches (racemes) arranged digitately, subdigitately or racemosely. Ligule membranous or scarious.
