Spikelets with 1 bisexual floret, and 1 or 2 minute sterile lemmas below it (except P paradoxa), flat, densely crowded into ovoid or cylindrical spike-like panicles, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes equal, complicate, enclosing the florets, usually with green stripes along the nerves, keeled; the keel usually bordered by a scarious wing (Fig. 49 c).
