Spikelets with 1 floret, disarticulating above the glumes, laterally compressed, 4–5 mm long. Glumes truncate, with awns 1 mm long, ciliate along the keels. Lemma much shorter than the glumes, awnless. Inflorescence a dense spike-like cylindrical panicle 7–12 cm long, up to 1 cm diam. Erect, tufted perennial up to 1.5 m high. Widespread on better soils.
