Dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves linear to linear-oblong or linear-lanceolate, alternate, coriaceous, with a prominent mid-vein. Male cones borne in the axils of scale-leaves or leaves near the base of the current year's shoots; the sporophylls each with 2 pollen sacs. Ovules borne singly or twinned at the end of the very short specialized lateral branches or receptacles, which are borne in a similar position to the male cones but on separate plants. Seeds blue-black, ± glaucous, ovoid or globular, solitary, rarely twin, borne upon the enlarged, fleshy, blue-black, ± glaucous receptacle.
