Freshwater plants submerged or floating, with long stems. Leaves alternate (opposite when under a branch or peduncle), thin when submerged, often leathery when above the water. Flowers bisexual, regular, in dense simple spikes on axillary peduncles. Perianth segments apparently 4, sometimes regarded as appendages of the stamens. Stamens 4, almost sessile, inserted at the base of the perianth segments. Carpels 4, superior, free, ± drupe-like when ripe.
