Stems sparsely to densely hairy. Leaves scabrous or hispid on both surfaces, 7–15 cm long. Heads few to many (50–200); in terminal corymbs. Involucre 4–6.5 mm long, bracts mostly 11–13. Florets 20–35. Fruiting head 3–4 mm diam., involucre bracts ± erect. Cypselas 1.5–2 mm long. Pappus 3–4 mm long. Erect herb to 1.5 m. Widespread in poorer soils. Fl. spring–summer
