Herbs or shrubs, glabrous to woolly. Leaves alternate, entire or divided. Heads terminal, solitary, in corymbs or panicles. Florets yellow. Involucre cylindrical or campanulate; the longest bracts in a single row; scale-like bracts at the base of the involucre. Receptacle naked or pitted. Ray florets (when present) female or rarely neuter. Disc florets tubular. Cypselas striate or angular. Pappus of numerous capillary hairs.
