Rays pink to purple. Stems ribbed and woody, slightly hairy. Leaves10–15 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, coarsely toothed, prickly towards base, stem clasping. Inflorescence loose corymbs with several hundred heads per plant. Bracts 3–5.5 mm long. Involucre bracts 19–23, 6–9 mm long. Ray florets 12–22. Cypsela c. 2.5 mm long, pappus 7–9 mm long. Perennial shrub to 1.5 m high. Coastal on sand. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. spring
