Fresh water or saltmarsh plants, glabrous. Leaves basal, linear. Flowers in spikes or spike-like racemes on a simple leafless scape. Perianth segments usually 6, in 2 whorls, caducous. Anthers 3–6, sessile or nearly so. Stigmas prominent and recurved after flowering. Carpels 3–6. Fruit a cluster of follicles.
