macranthaSpikelets with 1 floret, sessile or almost so, appressed to the notched rhachis, falling whole. Glume 1, keeled, coriaceous, dark brown, c. 5 mm long. Lemma hyaline. Inflorescence a narrow spike, 3–4 mm diam., 3–5 cm long. Perennial with rhizomes and erect aerial stems up to 30 cm high. Leaves glabrous, flat or convolute, 4–8 cm long, with a subulate often pungent pointed tip; ligule of fine hairs. Brackish swamps, dunes or cliffs near the sea coast. Fl. summer. Prickly Couch
