Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves flat to terete, often crowded at the base of the culm or reduced to sheaths. Flowers arranged in loose compound cymes or heads or solitary in the leaf axils. Perianth segments green to black, subequal. Stamens 3–6; filaments filiform or dilated at the base; anthers linear-oblong, erect. Ovary 1–3-locular with numerous ovules inserted on parietal axile or basal placentas. Fruit a capsule. (Colour of culms described for fresh material. Check for other culm characters in the middle of the culm)
