Perennial herbs. Leaves basal, flat with an edge against the culm, or terete. Spikelets with 1 perfect flower and 1 or more male or abortive ones below it, scarcely flattened, usually sessile, in a terminal panicle or spike. Glumes often obscurely distichous, several lower ones empty. Perianth scales 6 or less. Stamens usually 3. Style 3-fid. Nut obtusely 3-angular.
