Culm margins scabrous, sharp. Leaves usually shorter than culms, 3–6 mm wide. Panicle 4–15 cm long. Glumes 6–8, red-brown to grey-brown, minutely pubescent. Nut shining, brown. Outer perianth scales narrow-oblong, shorter than the obovate-acuminate inner ones. Mostly coastal extending to Blue Mts Sandy soils
