Spikelets with 2–several florets, pedicellate or rarely almost sessile, in a loose panicle or raceme. Spikelets disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes keeled, awnless, usually as long as the spikelet. Lemma usually with a thickening (callous) below the terminal sinus, short hairs evenly covering back and longer hairs in a row of tufts below sinus convex with 2 terminal lobes and a usually twisted and bent awn between them. Palea broad, conspicuous.
