Undershrubs or shrubs up to 2 m high with rigid or semi-rigid linear opposite leaves. Flowers arranged in terminal heads or pairs. Floral tube much longer than the ovary. Sepals usually 5, ± petaloid. Petals 5, white, incurved thus closing the floral tube except for a very short time as the style is extending. Stamens 10, alternating with 10 staminodes. Ovary 1-locular, with 2–3 basally attached ovules. Style long-exserted with a brush of hairs just below the stigma. Fruit a nut.
