Herbs or shrubs. Leaves usually petiolate. Flowers in lateral (extra-axillary) cymes which may appear to be racemes or umbels or rarely solitary. Calyx 5- rarely 4-lobed, spreading. Corolla broad-campanulate or stellate to rotate, 4–5-lobed, with a short tube. Filaments very short; anthers basifixed, connivent, exserted, opening by terminal pores. Fruit a globular, usually 2-locular berry.
