Rhizomatous, stoloniferous or tufted annuals or aquatic perennials. Culms mostly without nodes. Spikelets solitary or clustered, apparently lateral since a bract appears to continue the culm, several-flowered, sometimes proliferating (Fig. 46). Perianth bristles absent. Stamens 1–3. Style 2–3-fid; base not dilated. Nut variously trigonous, sometimes with swollen ridges, smooth reticulate or granular.
