Tufted annuals or perennials. Ligule membranous or sometimes reduced to cilia. Leaf blade, flat, folded, involute or convolute. Spikelets with 2–10 florets, disarticulating above the glumes. Inflorescence a panicle, loose and spreading or rarely narrow and spike-like. Glumes keeled, awnless, unequal, usually acute. Lemmas keeled, obtuse or acute; nerves not confluent towards the tip. Callus often with loose woolly hairs.
